Space Within a Space
In the heart of Seoul Auction's lobby lies a space of restrained aesthetics: The Concierge. This special retail space specializes in reselling and auctioning luxury brand watches, jewelry, and bags. Initially, we approached the design with a luxury concept that suited the products, but we developed it into a minimalist design considering the surrounding environment. Now, The Concierge stands as a paragon of minimalist architecture, seamlessly integrated with the lobby's white gallery.
Form Follows function
The Concierge is conceptualized as a "space within a space," embodying a minimalistic architectural house within the larger building. This approach not only respects the existing aesthetic but also enhances it. With its a large glass door entrance and a wide glass window, The Concierge offers an inviting openness. However, it simultaneously provides the necessary privacy at the reception desk area, essential for customers engaging in consultation. The balance between openness and privacy highlights the thoughtful design that adheres to the principle of 'form follows function.'
Honoring Artistic Environment
Spanning a modest 30 square meters, The Concierge features a clean white design with an open ceiling, reminiscent of a modern white architecture. The all-white walls, complemented by carefully positioned artwork, draw a connection to the Seoul Auction’s core business of art auctioning. This integration allows the space to fulfill its retail function while also honoring its artistic environment.
Thoughtful Material Selection
The materials chosen for The Concierge exemplify minimalist luxury. White paint, wood, beige tone leather, tile, carpet, and gold and silver accents harmonize to create a serene and sophisticated ambiance. Each material is selected for its aesthetic appeal and its ability to harmonize with the overall minimalist concept.
Intentional Display : The Beauty of Blank Space
The display space within The Concierge is meticulously designed to highlight luxury products. Watches and jewelry are showcased in rectangular boxes of three different sizes, with each display area carefully spaced vertically and horizontally by white walls. This use of the beauty of blank space creates a rhythmic spacing that not only emphasizes the products but also creates a visual harmony that enhances their appeal. Similarly, the wooden shelves by the window form a rhythmic pattern both vertically and horizontally, defining the display space and further elevates the minimal design’s aesthetic.
Architectural Showcase
The Concierge's design also takes into account its visibility within the building. During the day, the space remains discreet from the outside due to the building's perforated skin. However, at night, The Concierge becomes illuminated and visible through the perforated facade. The decision not to install a wall behind the wooden shelves facing the facade allows passersby to recognize and be drawn to The Concierge, showcasing the presence of the space.
Seoul Auction's The Concierge space masterfully blends minimalism and luxury, creating an environment that enhances its prestigious offerings while seamlessly integrating into its artistic surroundings. The design's thoughtful planning, meticulous material selection, and intentional display strategies come together to create a serene, elegant space that highlights each product. Rather than standing out, The Concierge subtly complements the overall aesthetic of the Seoul Auction lobby, ensuring that both the art and the luxury products on display are given the attention they deserve. This understated yet sophisticated approach emphasizes the beauty of minimalist design, where every element serves a purpose and contributes to an atmosphere of refined elegance.
